The ACASC’s vision is to create leaders in the sports chiropractic profession. This category of resources aims to help fulfil that vision by providing education and information on leadership growth and development.

The ACASC’s vision is to create leaders in the sports chiropractic profession. To support this vision, the

ACASC seeks to promote the growth and development of chiropractors and chiropractic students as they pursue leadership roles within sports chiropractic and serve as ambassadors within the broader sports medicine field. This guide is intended to provide education and resources for developing leaders while recognizing that each individual’s pathway, passions, and strengths are unique. Individuals should understand what inspires them and identify where they lead most effectively, expanding beyond the foundational concepts provided here.

Academics focuses on the educational side of sports chiropractic through interview-style discussions with experienced academic leaders.

Presenters:

Joel P Carmichael, DC, DACSP

A leading sports chiropractor and spine pain expert in Denver, Dr. Joel Carmichael, DC attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, graduating valedictorian magna cum laude in 1985. He became the second chiropractor in the United States to complete a one-year hospital residency in chiropractic family practice at Lindell Hospital with an emphasis in orthopedics. He attended grand rounds in orthopedics and rheumatology at Barnes Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine—ranked in 2007 as the 4th leading medical school in the country. Throughout his hospital residency, which was the first of its kind in the modern hospital era, Dr. Carmichael worked alongside medical physicians and surgeons, providing care in both inpatient and outpatient hospital settings.


John Scaringe, DC - President & CEO Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU)

A chiropractor by training, Dr. John Scaringe, DC, EdD, is an educator, author, advocate for healthcare transformation, and President of Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU), one of the nation’s first and only integrative, whole health universities.

Clinical highlights the practical side of sports chiropractic through interview-style conversations with experienced clinicians.

Steven T. Huybrecht, DC

Dr. Steven Huybrecht was raised in northern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Superior and earned his BS in Exercise Sport Science from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He continued his education at Northwestern Health Sciences University, where he earned a doctorate in chiropractic. During his time at NWHSU, Dr. Huybrecht was involved in various clubs, most notably with the Student American Chiropractic Association, where he held multiple chapter roles, including president, before being elected as the National Chair for the 2013/14 term. During his last trimester at NWHSU, he moved to North Carolina and worked in physical medicine and rehabilitation at High Point Regional Hospital in the inpatient rehab center under the direction of Todd Reiter, MD, DC. He currently serves as a chiropractor within the VA system

Jordan Knowlton-Key, DC, MS, NREMT, CSCS, ASP, DACBSP®, ICSC

Dr. Jordan Knowlton-Key currently serves as the chiropractic sports physician at the Lake Placid United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. He completed his chiropractic doctorate at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) and obtained his Master’s of Exercise Science from Concordia St. Paul University. After graduation, Dr. Jordan completed a two-year sports chiropractic residency at NWHSU’s Human Performance Center (HPC), a clinic of NWHSU that focuses on integrative health care for athletes, and became HPC faculty as the Integrative Sports Care Coordinator before starting his current position with the USOPC.

Brian Nook, DC, DACBSP, ICSC, FICC

Dr. Brian Nook is an experienced chiropractic educator, administrator, and clinician with a long-standing career in academic leadership and sports chiropractic. He currently serves as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California, where he oversees curriculum, faculty, staff, and students, and teaches within the chiropractic program. He also serves as Secretary-General for the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) and is an active faculty member in its education programs.

Research explores the role of research in advancing sports chiropractic through interview-style discussions with experienced researchers.

Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD

Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD, is the Executive Director of Research and Innovation at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Minneapolis, Minn. In her role, Dr. Maiers leverages high-quality research to inform healthcare policy and innovation initiatives on local, regional, and national levels. Her research utilizes mixed methods to inform a rich understanding of non-drug treatment options for spine-related pain, especially among older adults.

Dean Smith, DC, PHD, ICSC

Dr. Smith is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Health at Miami University. His academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in human biology, a master’s degree in exercise science, a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, and a PhD in brain and cognitive science with a focus on motor behavior and postural control.

Dr. Smith teaches courses in functional anatomy, motor skills, exercise and health, and musculoskeletal disorders. His research examines the effects of chiropractic care and exercise on human performance. He is the recipient of the 2018 American Chiropractic Association Researcher of the Year award and the 2021 Ohio State Chiropractic Association Chiropractor of the Year award.
